MIPP reaffirms alliance with Perikatan Nasional following crucial leadership talks in Johor
JOHOR BARU: The Malaysian Indian People’s Party (MIPP), led by its president P. Punithan, has officially declared its decision to remain firmly aligned with the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition, effectively putting to rest days of intense political speculation whether it will join Barisan Nasional (BN).
The announcement follows a highly anticipated high-level meeting in Johor Baru between MIPP leadership and PAS vice-president, federal opposition leader, and Terengganu Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar.
The political rumour mill had previously ignited after Punithan held formal talks with Deputy Prime Minister, Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, and UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. During those deliberations, Zahid Hamidi reportedly extended a formal invitation for MIPP to defect from PN and officially integrate into the BN fold, an engagement that Punithan later verified.
Despite the courtship from the ruling coalition, MIPP’s central leadership opted to maintain its integrity within PN. Punithan emphasised that the decision was anchored on mutual respect and the stable operational boundaries established since the party’s inception within the opposition matrix.
To bolster MIPP’s position in the southern state, the PN leadership has reportedly offered the party a strategic allocation of four state seats to contest in the upcoming state polls, intentionally mirroring the traditional footprint of the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC). MIC also contested in 4 state seats in the 2022 Johor state assembly elections.
Following his fruitful dialogue with Ahmad Samsuri, Punithan lauded PAS’s unwavering structural commitment to protecting and uplifting the socio-economic welfare of the ethnic Indian community. He highlighted that the Islamist party maintains a clear, operational policy framework dedicated to advancing the educational, welfare, and economic trajectories of the marginalised B40 Indian demographic.
According to media reports, Punithan pointed out that while BN has occupied power for decades, the current Pakatan Harapan (PH)-led administration has routinely failed to deliver on the key egalitarian reform promises it made to the electorate during the last general election.
Crucially, Punithan observed that under Ahmad Samsuri’s contemporary leadership, PAS is undergoing a progressive transformation to appeal to a broader, pluralistic electorate.
“We must collectively move beyond the narrow narrative of a ‘Green Wave’ that isolates specific demographics,” Punithan asserted. “The objective for PAS and its coalition partners now is to engineer a comprehensive ‘People’s Wave’ that champions the shared struggles of all citizens, regardless of ethnicity,” he further said.
MIPP’s Central Working Committee is scheduled to convene this coming Sunday to formalise this decision and chart the party’s path ahead.
