Indian High Commission’s felicitation event for organisers of ‘Swagatham’ – for recognition into M’sian Book of records!

A grand welcoming ceremony titled “Selamat Datang Modiji’ was held on behalf of Malaysian Indians on the evening of February 7 at the Mines International Exhibition and Convention Centre in Serdang, Selangor, to welcome the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was in Malaysia on February 7 and 8 on an official visit. More than 15,000 people attended the event. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also joined Modi at the function.

The key highlight of the Indian community event was the grand ‘Swagatham Performance’ coordinated by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Indian Cultural Centre (NSCBICC) featuring about 800 Indian classical dance performers from 46 different dance institutes and community organisation across Malaysia.   This historic presentation was officially recognised by the Malaysia Book of records under the title “Most performers in Traditional Indian Dance”.

The Indian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur on Friday 27th of February 2026 held a appreciation ceremony at the NSCBICC in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, to felicitate all heads of cultural institutions, academics and community associations and organisations who participated in the Swagatham dance and also at the national day reception of India organised on 27 January 2026.

The High Commissioner of India to Malaysia, B. N. Reddy, attended the event as the guest of honour and presented mementos to all those who were involved in the above two events.

In his speech, he conveyed appreciation and gratitude to those who contributed to the events organised for Modi’s visit as well as the Indian Republic Day celebrations. He also mentioned that as the Prime Minister was about to board his flight in Kuala Lumpur after completing his two-day visit, he had remarked that the events were well organised and that the grand “Swagatham” dance performance, in particular, was unforgettable.

The instructors of the dance groups that organised the “Swagatham” performance also shared their experiences at the appreciation event, speaking about the challenges and difficulties they faced, as well as the joy they felt when the programme concluded successfully.

Among the distinguished guests present at the Thanksgiving event were renowned dancer Datuk Ramli Ibrahim, dancer Indira Manickam, and Thillai Raj, President of the Temple of Fine Arts, along with many other prominent personalities.
