Bharathirajaa, legendary filmmaker who revolutionised Tamil Cinema passes away at 84!

CHENNAI — Renowned filmmaker Bharathirajaa, widely revered as Iyakkunar Imayam (the Everest of Directors) for single-handedly shifting the paradigm of Tamil cinema, passed away on Wednesday morning following a period of declining health. He was 84 years old.

Bharathirajaa is celebrated as the visionary architect who liberated Tamil cinema from the confines of indoor studio sets and artificial stages in the 1970s. By taking the cameras directly to raw, rustic locations, he birthed a magnificent cultural renaissance that captured the true essence of rural life, making simple village narratives a massive success in mainstream cinema.

While many initial critics compartmentalised him as a director strictly capable of helming rural-centric movies, Bharathirajaa quickly shattered definitions by orchestrating an array of multi-genre, blockbuster cinematic triumphs.

His directorial debut, 16 Vayathinile, challenged contemporary tropes by featuring everyday characters and a loincloth-clad protagonist set against a realistic village backdrop.

Yet, he pivoted seamlessly with his subsequent project, Sigappu Rojakkal, a sleek, modernised psychological thriller starring Kamal Haasan, proving his mastery over slick, urban suspense. This versatility led to a historic string of consecutive box-office successes, with many of his films running for over 100 days to celebrate silver jubilee milestones.

Bharathirajaa’s filmography boasts several timeless cinematic milestones. Films such as Alaigal Oivathillai, Vedham Pudhithu, and Puthumai Penn were lauded for directly confronting deep-seated societal issues and advocating for progressive cultural transformations.

Beyond his directorial prowess, he was a prolific star-maker. He is credited with introducing the legendary lyricist Vairamuthu to the silver screen. Furthermore, his historic, close-knit creative alliance with maestro Ilaiyaraaja, who hailed from a neighbouring village, yielded some of the most spectacular screenplays and critically acclaimed musical scores in Indian cinema history.

Barathirajaa also introduced a host of new faces who later became big stars in the Tamil film industry. Radhika, Karthik, Radha, Suganya, and Revathy were some of the stars who catapulted to stardom by acting in his movies. He is also credited with bringing out another facet of Sivaji Ganesan’s acting talent in the movie “Muthal Mariyathai”.

Tributes pour in across the political and cinematic spectrum

The announcement of his passing has triggered widespread mourning across Tamil Nadu. Following the news, a vanguard of eminent personalities, including former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and current Chief Minister Vijay, alongside numerous high-profile cinematic icons and industry veterans, arrived at the late director’s residence to pay their final respects and honour his rich, unassailable legacy.
