Anwar praises NGO-led peace initiative as a sign of national maturity

KUALA LUMPUR – Recent peace initiatives spearheaded by Islamic and Hindu non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have been lauded as a significant milestone in Malaysia’s social evolution, signalling a “mature” citizenry that prioritises harmony over discord.

In a statement issued, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the efforts were praised as a definitive rejection of racial and religious division. The move by various religious bodies to find common ground is being framed as a reflection of the “true soul” of the nation, rooted in compassion and mutual respect, Anwar added.

“This reflects the level of maturity among the people in choosing the path of peace, rejecting division, and upholding the spirit of mutual respect,” the statement read.

Strengthening the Foundation

The peace pact comes at a time when national unity remains a top priority for the administration. The statement emphasised that the culture of togetherness is not merely a social preference but the fundamental “foundation of national strength” that must be protected by all levels of society.

Beyond the religious organisations involved, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) were also singled out for their role in facilitating and securing the environment necessary for these dialogues to take place.

The success of this collaboration is now being positioned as a blueprint for future national unity efforts. By resolving potential frictions through proactive NGO engagement rather than intervention, proponents hope this will serve as a lasting example of how Malaysia handles its diverse social fabric.

On the 18th of March 2026, Hindu NGOs led by MAHIMA President Datuk Sivakumar and Muslim lawyers association held a cordial discussion to overcome the current misunderstanding on the Hindu temples.
