FIFA: Nishan Mather Velupillai becomes the first Tamil to play in the World Cup!
Canberra: For the first time in the history of the FIFA World Cup, a player of Tamil descent has taken the field, marking a deeply significant and proud milestone for the global Tamil community.
Although India has never qualified for the FIFA World Cup, several people of Indian origin who migrated abroad have previously participated in international sports events such as Cricket. However, until now, no Tamil player had ever set foot on a FIFA World Cup pitch. That long wait has officially come to an end, with a Tamil player making his debut in the world’s grandest sporting tournament.
In the ongoing FIFA World Cup, which is hosted by three nations, namely Mexico, the USA and Canada, the Australian national team secured qualification with Tamil footballer Nishan Velupillai (pic) named in their tournament squad. While Velupillai did not feature in the starting 11 for Australia’s opening match against Turkey, he was brought on as a substitute in the 61st minute of the game, officially marking his World Cup debut.
With this appearance, he etches his name into the history books as the first-ever Tamilian to play in a FIFA World Cup.
From Grassroots in Australia to the Global Stage
Nishan Velupillai’s father, Sasinath Velupillai, is a Sri Lankan Tamil who initially migrated to Malaysia and eventually settled in Australia. Born in Melbourne, Nishan demonstrated exceptional football talent from a very young age.
He rose through the ranks of Australia’s domestic league, putting on standout performances as a winger for the A-League club Melbourne Victory. His stellar club form paved the way for his senior international debut for Australia in October 2024, during a crucial World Cup qualifying match against China.
In a fairytale debut, Velupillai made an immediate impact by scoring his first international goal just seven minutes after coming off the bench. Following that explosive start to his international career, Nishan Velupillai has now graced the ultimate stage at the FIFA World Cup, bringing immense pride to the Tamil community worldwide.
