K. Bhagyaraj – Prominent Tamil movie Director-Actor passes away at 73!
CHENNAI: The Tamil film industry is in mourning following the sudden demise of legendary director, screenwriter, and actor K. Bhagyaraj, who passed away this morning (Saturday, 27 June 2026) due to a cardiac arrest. He was 73.
The tragedy comes just two weeks after the passing of his mentor and veteran director Bharathiraja, marking a double blow for Indian cinema.
According to family sources, Bhagyaraj had recently returned to Chennai after attending the wedding of actress Khushbu’s daughter in Goa. This morning, while out for his routine morning walk, he complained of sudden chest pain. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
A master storyteller and directorial icon
Bhagyaraj began his cinematic journey as an assistant director to Bharathiraja, making his debut in the landmark 1977 film 16 Vayathinile. A proud native of Coimbatore, he was celebrated for expertly weaving the regional Coimbatore slang, culture, and lifestyle into his screenplays, making them deeply relatable to the masses.
Known as a master of screenplays, Bhagyaraj’s structural ingenuity defined an entire era of Tamil cinema. Many of his collaborative projects with Bharathiraja received critical acclaim for their narrative depth. Notably, his film ‘Oru Kaidhiyin Diary’ directed by Bharathiraja is widely regarded as one of the finest screenplays in Indian cinema history. When the film was later remade in Hindi, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Bhagyaraj was chosen to direct the project himself.
During his peak, Bhagyaraj’s movies were commercial juggernauts, consistently achieving silver jubilee runs at the box office. Beyond directing, he also successfully transitioned into acting, winning hearts with his versatile roles. He was also credited with introducing numerous actors and directors to the industry, including popular actor-director Parthiban, who began his career as Bhagyaraj’s assistant.
