S. Janaki, a popular South Indian playback singer, passed away at 88!

Mysuru (Mysore) – The legendary playback singer S. Janaki, known as the “Nightingale of the South” and one of the finest female voices in Tamil cinema history, has passed away at age 88 in Mysuru. Over her illustrious career, she recorded more than 48,000 songs across multiple languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada.

Among her most unforgettable hits is the song “Singaravelane Deva” from the 1960 film Konjum Salangai. Her numerous collaborations with the renowned singer S. P. Balasubrahmanyam also achieved immense popularity and remain deeply cherished by music lovers.

Another significant milestone in her career came when she worked with the legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja on his debut film, Annakili. Her songs for the movie became massive hits, playing across every corner of the region and catapulting her to the absolute pinnacle of fame. Following that success, she went on to deliver countless unforgettable tracks composed by Ilaiyaraaja, cementing her place in the hearts of Tamil cinema fans.

Janaki was a four-time recipient of the National Film Award. She won the prestigious honour for her exceptional rendition of “Sendhoorapoove” from 16 Vayadhinile, as well as for the track “Inji Iduppazhaga” from the film Devar Magan.

She was predeceased by her only son, Murali Krishna. While S. Janaki may have left this world, her mesmerising voice and timeless songs will eternally resonate in the air, keeping her memory alive in the hearts of Tamil music fans forever.
