SEREMBAN: In a major political development just two days ahead of Saturday’s (1 August 2026) Negeri Sembilan state assembly election, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim issued a candid public apology during a campaign rally targeting Indian voters, expressing regret over past remarks regarding “illegal temples” (Kuil Haram)
Addressing a predominantly Indian audience during his campaign swing across Negeri Sembilan, Prime Minister Anwar addressed long-standing grievances surrounding his past statements:
“I recognise that referring to certain Hindu places of worship as ‘unauthorised’ or ‘illegal’ caused distress,” Anwar stated. “As a human being, I am prone to errors during public addresses. If my words hurt the sentiments of the Indian community, I offer my sincere apologies.”
The public retraction has spread rapidly across social media platforms, drawing praise from political figures and community leaders who commended the Prime Minister’s humility and open-hearted approach.
Political observers note that Anwar’s apology comes at a critical juncture for Pakatan Harapan (PH). Following recent divisive rhetoric from Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor regarding non-Malay communities, Indian voters in Negeri Sembilan had displayed growing disillusionment. Analysts suggest that Anwar’s timely reconciliation may soften criticism and help consolidate Indian voter support behind Pakatan Harapan candidates in key mixed constituencies on polling day.
Anwar’s announcement that from now on, he will be fully in charge of Indian affairs in the country has also caught the attention of the Indian community, as social media was flooded with his announcement. All major Tamil online media and mainstream media also carried news of Anwar’s apology and his announcement of taking over the affairs of the Indian community.
Although it is seen as a move to woo Indian voters in Negeri Sembilan, it is timely and appropriate, as the Indian community’s 15% vote bank is crucial for any coalition to win the majority seats in the state and form the next government.
