Kortumalai Pillayar Temple Kumbabishegam attracts devotees across the world

KUALA LUMPUR: Thousands of Hindu devotees from across Malaysia and abroad are gathering in the capital as grand preparations reach their final stages for the 6th Maha Kumbhabhishekam (consecration ceremony) of the historic Kottumalai Pillaiyar Temple (Court Hill Sri Ganesar Temple), located on Jalan Pudu Lama.

The consecration rituals will take place tomorrow (Sunday 23 August 2026) morning between 8:30 AM and 11:00 AM. Temple Committee President Tan Sri Dato’ R. Nadarajah announced that extensive arrangements have been made to host the vast influx of worshippers attending the auspicious occasion.

In the lead-up to tomorrow’s main event, special yagna (sacred fire) ceremonies, homams, and daily poojas have been conducted at the specially erected Yagasalai within the temple complex. Devotees have been flocking to the shrine to offer prayers and obtain the blessings of Lord Ganesha ahead of the consecration.

A Sacred landmark with historical roots

Nestled on a small hill along Jalan Pudu, the Kottumalai Pillaiyar Temple holds deep historical and spiritual significance in Kuala Lumpur. The name “Kottumalai” (Court Hill) stems from the temple’s proximity to Malaya’s former High Court complex. Historically, legal practitioners, plaintiffs, and defendants routinely visited the shrine to pray for favourable verdicts before attending court proceedings. Over the decades, the shrine grew into a prominent place of worship not only for Indian lawyers and devotees, but also for Chinese legal professionals and locals who frequented the hill.

Global Diaspora Returns; Mass Food Distribution Arranged

The upcoming Maha Kumbhabhishekam has drawn thousands of local devotees, as well as members of the Malaysian Indian diaspora returning from overseas, to witness the once-in-12-years ritual and seek divine blessings.

To support the massive turnout, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) has arranged mass vegetarian meal distributions (Annadhanam), catering food for over 10,000 devotees.

Temple officials also confirmed that public contributions in the form of cash and gold/silver ornaments donated towards the temple’s granite redevelopment and consecration project have crossed RM 4.7 million.

In Hindu tradition, participating in a Kumbhabhishekam, particularly being anointed by the holy sanctified water (Tirtha) sprinkled from the temple spires (Kumbha), is considered a deeply sacred experience believed to bring spiritual purification, peace, and prosperity.
