BERSAMA’s dilemma: Stand Alone or Join Hands in Melaka? Unlikely to form an electoral pact with any parties!
KUALA LUMPUR- Doubts remain over whether Bersama, led by Rafizi Ramli, will forge an electoral pact with any party ahead of the upcoming Melaka state assembly election.
Under the Rafizi Ramli-Nik Nazmi leadership combination, Bersama has rapidly emerged as a formidable independent force. Months ago, the party initially announced its intention to contest 15 seats and introduced its candidate lineup. Bersama has since expanded its campaign, declaring that it will field candidates in 16 constituencies.
While rival political parties remain embroiled in protracted debates over coalition partnerships and candidate selections, Bersama candidates have already hit the ground running. It is actively engaging voters through intensive social media campaigns and on-the-ground outreach.
Observers note that Bersama cannot be underestimated in the upcoming Melaka election. Under Rafizi Ramli’s direction, the party is setting a benchmark for how a modern political entity should operate, leveraging dynamic grassroots mobilisation, advanced technology, and digital platforms.
Forming a last-minute pact with another party could significantly dilute Bersama’s distinct brand identity and political momentum. Consequently, all signs point toward the party contesting independently. The closest ally Bersama can choose as a coalition partner appears to be MUDA, the party once headed by Syed Saddiq, the MP for Muar. However, whether MUDA will join Bersama or choose Pakatan Harapan remains to be seen.
For fence-sitters, anti-corruption champions, advocates seeking systemic reform in the name of Reformasi, and especially youth voters, Bersama has increasingly positioned itself as a beacon of hope in the political landscape.
One political observer said Bersama would run solo in Melaka and other upcoming elections, and that, based on their performance, they may seek an electoral pact during the 16th General Election.
Bersama’s entry as a solo player in the Melaka state assembly elections may bring about interesting outcomes. If Bersama can split sizeable votes in a particular constituency that may determine the ultimate winner, whether Pakatan, Barisan Nasional or the now-suspended Perikatan coalition.
Meanwhile, negotiations have begun between Bersatu and Pakatan Harapan representatives for a possible electoral pact for the Melaka state assembly elections.
