CHENNAI: Renowned music composer Deva, credited with pioneering and popularising ‘Gaana’ music, the urban folk genre of Tamil Nadu in Tamil cinema, passed away today, Saturday, October 17, at the age of 75.

Born Devanesan Chokkalingam, Deva began his career modestly, initially composing devotional album songs before rising to prominence as one of Tamil cinema’s most successful music directors.

Throughout his distinguished career, Deva composed numerous memorable hits. Notably, he delivered chart-topping soundtracks for Superstar Rajinikanth’s blockbuster films, including ‘Annamalai’ and ‘Baasha’, which catapulted him to the pinnacle of fame.

The iconic “Superstar” title-sequence theme music, composed by Deva for Rajinikanth’s films, set an enduring benchmark for future composers. Demonstrating its timeless popularity, even in Rajinikanth’s latest release ‘Jailer 2’, composed by Anirudh, the classic intro musical theme originally created by Deva was featured once again during the title card display.

He passed away at a private hospital in Chennai following a sudden cardiac arrest and age-related health complications.

Known for his humility and soft-spoken nature, Deva leaves behind an indelible legacy in Tamil film music, securing an everlasting place in the hearts of Tamil movie music lovers.
