Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections: Nominations process ends; Thiruma’s decision impacting DMK’s votes

CHENNAI: The nomination process for the highly anticipated Tamil Nadu Assembly elections concluded today. Candidates now have until the 9th of April to withdraw their nominations, after which the final list will be clarified. Voting is scheduled for April 23rd, and the vote counting will be on the 4th of May.

As the final stages of the nomination process unfold, attention turns to the intensity of the contests across various constituencies. Political observers are closely monitoring whether any candidates will withdraw their nominations by the April 9th deadline.

Meanwhile, the DMK-led alliance, which was expected to be strong, is facing several setbacks and controversies. Specifically, the statements made by Thol. Thirumavalavan, a Member of Parliament from Chidambaram, has stirred a significant political storm by announcing his intent to contest from the Kattumannarkoil assembly constituency on both social media and in the political arena.

Following this, Thirumavalavan unexpectedly reversed his stance, citing that he would not contest from Kattumannarkoil due to the “baseless accusations” levelled against him. This sudden “U-turn” has become a subject of intense debate.

Political analysts suggest that due to these controversies, the votes of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the community associated with Thirumavalavan may not go to the DMK as expected. Instead, there are indications that these votes might shift towards Vijay, potentially impacting the overall electoral outcome.
