Kamalhaasan decides not to contest Assembly Elections, pledges support to DMK Alliance
CHENNAI: In a significant political development, Kamalhaasan, popular actor and founder-president of Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), has announced that his party will not contest the upcoming State Assembly elections. Instead, MNM will provide full support to the DMK-led alliance.
The announcement followed a meeting between Kamalhaasan and DMK President M.K. Stalin at Anna Arivalayam, the DMK headquarters in Chennai, yesterday.
The Dispute Over Symbol
Reliable sources indicate that the decision to abstain from contesting follows a stalemate during seat-sharing negotiations. It was reported that the DMK offered MNM two constituencies, but with a strict condition: MNM candidates were required to contest under the DMKās “Rising Sun” symbol.
Kamalhaasan, however, remained firm on his party’s candidates using MNM’s own “Torchlight” symbol. When neither party would compromise, Kamal reportedly declined the two seats and withdrew his party from the race altogether.
A “Sacrifice” for the Alliance
Addressing the media, Kamal framed the withdrawal not as a setback but as a strategic sacrifice for the greater good of the alliance. He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the DMK coalition’s success, stating he looks forward to congratulating M.K. Stalin on the day of his swearing-in as Chief Minister once again.
Uncertainty Among Supporters
Despite Haasan’s public backing of the DMK, political analysts are questioning whether his support base will follow suit. There are concerns that MNM supporters across Tamil Nadu may feel sidelined by the decision not to field candidates.
While MNM holds a specific segment of the vote share, primarily driven by Kamal’s fan base, it remains to be seen whether these voters will cast their ballots for the DMK in his absence or simply abstain.
Kamal is currently serving his term as a member of the Rajya Sabha, a seat he holds due to support from the DMK.
