Vijay to contest from 2 constituencies in Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections – announces candidates for all 234!
CHENNAI: In a move that has sent ripples through the political landscape of Tamil Nadu, actor-turned-politician Vijay has announced that he will contest from two separate constituencies in the state’s upcoming Assembly elections, scheduled for April 23.
The announcement came as his party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), released its full list of candidates for all 234 assembly seats. Nominations are set to open across the state tomorrow, Monday, April 30.
Vijay is slated to contest from the Perambur constituency in Chennai, which is part of the North Chennai Parliamentary constituency, and the Trichy East constituency in Tiruchirappalli. While high-profile leaders such as Rahul Gandhi and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have historically contested from two parliamentary seats, Vijay’s strategy has drawn scrutiny from political analysts.
Under Indian electoral law, if a candidate wins both seats, they must resign from one, necessitating a by-election. If they win one and lose the other, the loss is formally recorded, while they retain the seat they won.
The choice of these specific constituencies has sparked debate among critics. Some analysts suggest that the high concentration of Christian voters in both Perambur and Trichy East seems to have influenced Vijay’s decision.
This has led to accusations of “vote bank politics,” with critics pointing to a potential contradiction in Vijay’s political platform. Despite launching his party with the egalitarian slogan *”Pirappokkum Ella Uyirkkum”* (All are born equal) and pledging a movement free from caste and religious bias, observers argue that targeting specific demographics suggests a more conventional, religion-calculation-based political strategy.
As the TVK prepares to file nominations for all 234 seats, the primary question remains: how much of the existing vote share will the new party displace? The acceptance of these nominations by election officials will mark the next critical phase for the TVK as it seeks to establish itself as a formidable third force in Tamil Nadu politics.
