Trump issues fresh warning to Iran: Reopen Strait of Hormuz or face retaliation

WASHINGTON: In a significant escalation of geopolitical tensions, U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to Iran, demanding the immediate, unhindered reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to international oil tankers.

This latest development comes after a brief period of relative calm following the President’s previous announcement of a temporary ceasefire.

President Trump cautioned that if Iran continues to block the critical maritime corridor, the United States is prepared to launch renewed military strikes. The President explicitly listed potential targets, which include targeted strikes on Iran’s oil wells and energy facilities and utilities, destruction of power generation plants and seawater desalination facilities. Trump also warned of the potential occupation of Kharg Island.

“Until now, we have refrained from striking these specific strategic targets,” the President noted, indicating that the U.S. military has exercised restraint that may soon come to an end.

While acknowledging that diplomatic negotiations between the two nations are ongoing, President Trump emphasised that a favourable and amicable agreement must be reached swiftly. He stated that the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz is unacceptable and would trigger a massive military response.

The President framed the potential military action as a direct response to the deaths of American soldiers involved in the conflict. He further characterised the current Iranian administration as a “terrorist regime” that has been in power for 47 years, asserting that the U.S. would deliver a “fitting response” to protect its interests and avenge its fallen personnel.

The global community remains on high alert as the situation in the Persian Gulf remains volatile, with energy markets closely monitoring the status of the world’s most vital oil transit point.
