Hindu Temple in Penang gets Temporary Occupation License

George Town: While the debate on purported illegal Hindu temples is raging in the country, raising various issues and controversies, Indian leaders are also stepping up efforts to register such temples and are seeking recognition from the authorities.

A Hindu temple in Penang, the Swamimalai Sri Muniswarar at Taman Brown, Pulau Pinang, on Thursday, 12th of March 2026 received a temporary occupation license for their land from the authorities.

“We have successfully managed to hand over the Temporary Occupation Licence (TOL) for the land to Rumah Berhala Swamimalai Sri Muniswarar, Taman Brown, Pulau Pinang. After many years of effort and discussions, it is truly encouraging that the temple has finally received this approval,” Senator Dr Lingeshwaran Arunasalam from DAP posted on his Facebook page.

“Moving forward, we will continue working to ensure that temples are properly regularised and granted the necessary approvals so they can operate lawfully and securely. In the state of Penang, we will do our very best to assist as many temples as possible in obtaining proper recognition and approval,” Lingeshwaran said.

Lingeshwaran also recorded his sincere appreciation to MP for Bukit Gelugor, Ramkarpal Singh; MP for Jelutong, RSN Rayer; and PKR state assemblyman A. Kumaresan for their support and cooperation in making this possible.
