Melaka Polls: BERSAMA to field Prasanth Kumar, former MB’s aide in Machap Jaya!

Melaka: Parti Bersama Malaysia has unveiled its 15 state constituency candidates for the upcoming Melaka State Election, marking an early declaration ahead of the formal dissolution of the Melaka State Legislative Assembly.

Among the announced lineup, 32-year-old Prasanth Kumar Brakasam has been named as the candidate for the Machap Jaya constituency. His candidacy, one of the 15, was formally announced by BERSAMA.

Posting on his social media pages, Prasanth described his age as an opportunity to bring fresh energy, new ideas, and a youth-oriented perspective to the Machap Jaya constituency.

Prasanth, a native of Melaka and an alumnus of MRSM Terendak in Sungai Udang, possesses a background in state and federal administration. He previously contested the Rim state seat during the 2021 Melaka State Election and served as Special Secretary to the Chief Minister of Melaka from 2018 to 2020.

At the federal level, he served for nearly three years as a Special Tasks Officer to Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, then Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change (NRECC), which was later restructured as the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES).

Prasanth holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from the University of London and is currently pursuing his Master’s degree at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM).

Local Roots in Machap Jaya

Addressing his connection to Machap Jaya, Prasanth highlighted his family’s long-standing ties to the area, noting that his father’s agricultural land is located in Tebong, where Prasanth also operates a leased oil palm plantation.

Stating that his local roots and administrative background prepare him to serve the constituency, Prasanth expressed his commitment to engaging directly with residents, addressing local grievances, and representing all communities across Machap Jaya as campaigning gets underway.

Can Bersama make an impact in Melaka?

Whether the number 15 holds particular significance for Parti Bersama Malaysia (BERSAMA) President Rafizi Ramli remains to be seen, but the newly restructured party is once again fielding candidates across 15 state constituencies, this time in the upcoming Melaka State Election.

After contesting 15 seats in the Johor State Election and opting out of the Negeri Sembilan state polls to observe from the sidelines, BERSAMA has gathered electoral data and experience from both outings. The party is now deploying that insight alongside new strategies in Melaka.

While 15 seats represent a small fraction of Johor’s 56 state constituencies, they account for more than half of Melaka’s 28 state seats. BERSAMA has bypassed the traditional timeline for major coalitions by announcing its 15 candidates early and kicking off on-the-ground campaign operations.

Political observers warn against underestimating BERSAMA’s potential influence in Melaka. Despite suffering deposit forfeitures in every seat it contested during its inaugural outing in Johor, the party’s current standing in Melaka reflects a different political dynamic.

By sitting out the Negeri Sembilan polls, BERSAMA conserved its financial and organisational resources, consolidating its internal structure for the Melaka campaign. Post-election analyses of the Johor polls revealed that BERSAMA candidates played a decisive spoiler role in key constituencies such as Bukit Batu and Perling. In those seats, the vote split caused by BERSAMA directly contributed to BN candidates defeating Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidates.

Regardless of whether BERSAMA secures outright victories in Melaka, analysts believe the vote share it captures will likely determine the win-loss margins for major rival coalitions across contested seats. BERSAMA’s momentum has also been bolstered by the recent entry of former PKR Subang Member of Parliament Wong Chen, whose active campaign involvement is expected to strengthen the party’s reach.
