Ganabathirau urges PM – “Act firmly against extremists”

Klang: The DAP MP for Klang Ganabatirau Verman has urged the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, to act firmly against extremists and their unacceptable narratives. “Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is correct in urging the peace-loving majority to reject hatred, slander and extremism. However, many Malaysians feel that the Madani government’s greatest weakness from the very beginning was its failure to act firmly, consistently and swiftly against extremist narratives, racial-religious provocations and incitement. When insensitive controversies and hate-driven remarks surfaced — including the ‘sock issue’ that escalated into religious incitement, insults against the Indian community, the use of derogatory terms such as ‘keling’, attacks on Hindu religious sensitivities, and labelling Hindu temples as ‘kuil haram’ — the response was often seen as delayed, inconsistent or insufficiently firm. This allowed extremist voices to grow louder and created the perception that intolerance and provocation were being normalised in public discourse,” Ganabatirau said in a media statement.

“A peaceful and multiracial Malaysia cannot be sustained if hate speech, religious bigotry and incitement are treated selectively or according to political convenience. The government must demonstrate moral courage and apply the law fairly and consistently against any individual or group that threatens national harmony, regardless of race, religion or political affiliation,” Ganabatirau further noted in his statement.

“The silent majority has always believed in moderation, mutual respect and coexistence. What Malaysians seek now is not merely rhetoric against extremism, but firm and principled action that reassures every citizen that unity, justice and inclusiveness remain the true foundation of our nation,” Ganabatirau reiterated.
