Yuneswaran meets Tamil Nadu CM Vijay – hands over congratulatory letter from PM Anwar!

CHENNAI: In a significant diplomatic and cultural engagement, Malaysia’s Deputy Minister of National Unity and Member of Parliament for Segamat, R. Yuneswaran Ramaraj, met with the newly elected Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Vijay, during a brief working visit to the South Indian state. During the meeting, Yuneswaran personally delivered a special congratulatory letter from Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The meeting follows Vijay’s recent victory in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections, after which he assumed office as the state’s Chief Minister. Following the election results, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had previously extended his warm wishes to the actor-turned-politician via social media, a gesture that Chief Minister Vijay acknowledged with deep gratitude in a public response.

The meeting between the Malaysian Deputy Minister Yuneswaran and the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has attracted widespread attention from the local media in Tamil Nadu. Speaking to journalists after the courtesy call, Yuneswaran expressed his delight over the successful interaction and confirmed that he had formally presented the Malaysian Prime Minister’s official letter of congratulations to the Chief Minister.

Looking ahead, political circles anticipate a further deepening of ties, as Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is expected to visit India this coming September to attend the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. Sources indicate that a visit to Chennai is being planned as part of the Prime Minister’s itinerary, during which an official bilateral meeting with Chief Minister Vijay is scheduled.

The relationship between Malaysia and Tamil Nadu remains profoundly strong, as Tamils constitute approximately 80 per cent of the Malaysian Indian population, with the vast majority tracing their ancestral roots to Tamil Nadu.

The bond between Chief Minister Vijay and his Malaysian diaspora was clearly evident during the grand audio launch of his film Janayagan, held in Kuala Lumpur in December 2025. The ticketed event drew an overwhelming crowd of nearly 80,000 Malaysian Tamils who gathered to show their immense support for the leader. Following his return from Malaysia, Vijay contested the Tamil Nadu state polls and secured the mandate to become the state’s Chief Minister.
