Sungai Sedu Tamil School secures 3 acres of land from Developer
Banting — At a time when many Tamil schools across Malaysia are grappling with falling enrollment and shrinking resources, one school in Selangor is charting a different course — expanding its footprint and planning for growth.
SJK (Tamil) Sungai Sedu has secured an additional 2 acres of land for future development, bringing its total landholding to 3 acres, following successful negotiations with national investment corporation Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB), the landowner and developer behind the ongoing housing project in that area known as Kota Sri Mas.
The school, situated at the 17th mile along the Klang-Banting road, had for years been operating on a modest one-acre plot — a space that the school’s management board deemed wholly inadequate for the institution’s long-term needs. The land on which the school stands was formerly part of Sungai Sedu estate, which PNB has since acquired and is currently developing into a residential township known as Kota Sri Mas.
When PNB assumed ownership of the estate, the school board moved swiftly, filing a formal application not only to retain the existing school grounds but also to seek an additional two acres to accommodate future expansion, improved facilities, and enhanced co-curricular infrastructure.
The school board’s Chairman, Datuk A. Velayutham, confirmed that the protracted negotiations with PNB have yielded a positive outcome, with the corporation formally approving the allocation of 3 acres for the school.
“After considerable effort and sustained negotiations, PNB has graciously agreed to our request,” said Velayutham. “We are deeply grateful to the PNB management for their understanding and generosity in supporting Tamil education.”
The approved land allocation has since been officially communicated to the Kuala Langat District Education Department. The school management is currently registering all three acres of the land in the school’s name, with assistance from the Ministry of Education.
Velayutham expressed confidence that the additional land would position the school well for growth, stating that the board stands ready to construct new buildings should student enrolment increase in the coming years.
He extended his appreciation to all parties whose support made the land acquisition possible, including the Ministry of Education, the District Land Office, PNB, the school’s headmaster and teaching staff, the Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG), and all other stakeholders who provided guidance and assistance throughout the process.
While demographic shifts and urbanisation have led to declining numbers at many vernacular institutions, SJK (Tamil) Sungai Sedu’s expanded land holding signals a renewed commitment to building an institution capable of serving the community well into the future.
