CHENNAI / KUALA LUMPUR: Recent speculation in Malaysian and Indian media regarding a potential meeting between Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay during Anwar’s upcoming trip to India has been dispelled.
Latest reports confirm that Chief Minister Vijay is proceeding with his scheduled official tour of European nations starting today, September 10, rendering a bilateral meeting with the Malaysian leader impossible.
Media Speculation and Scheduling Conflicts
In recent days, several Malaysian and Indian media outlets widely reported on Prime Minister Anwar’s upcoming visit to India for the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. Initial reports suggested that Vijay might postpone his overseas trip to host Prime Minister Anwar during a proposed stopover in Chennai.
However, official updates from Tamil Nadu confirm that Chief Minister Vijay will depart from Chennai tonight, September 10, on an official delegation to European countries, beginning in London. The week-long trade and investment mission aims to finalise key investment agreements for Tamil Nadu. With Chief Minister Vijay scheduled to return to India only on September 17, he will be out of the country during Prime Minister Anwar’s presence in India.
Revised Itinerary for Malaysian Prime Minister
With Chief Minister Vijay unavailable in Chennai, sources say Prime Minister Anwar has adjusted his travel plans to bypass the stopover in Tamil Nadu.
Following his main diplomatic engagements at the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Prime Minister Anwar is expected to visit Kerala before travelling on to the Maldives, a nearby nation, and then returning to Malaysia.
Political Context of Diplomatic Ties
Political analysts note that high-profile meetings between Malaysian Prime Ministers and prominent South Indian figures have carried significant political weight in the past. During his tenure, former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak made headlines when he visited Chennai during an official trip to India in 2017 to meet legendary film icon Rajinikanth. Political observers at the time viewed the high-profile engagement as a strategic move to resonate with the substantial Tamil diaspora and Indian voter base in Malaysia as GE 2018 approached. However, Najib failed to win the 2018 general elections.
After Vijay’s political ascent and election as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Prime Minister Anwar publicly congratulated him on social media. Shortly thereafter, Malaysia’s Deputy Minister of National Unity, R. Yuneswaran, travelled to Chennai to hand-deliver an official congratulatory letter from Prime Minister Anwar to Vijay.
While a follow-up meeting between the two leaders was anticipated during Prime Minister Anwar’s trip for the BRICS Summit, Vijay’s scheduling commitments in Europe have ruled out the engagement.
