Tamil Nadu By-Elections: TVK leads in Maduranthakam & Dharapuram

CHENNAI: Vote counting is currently underway for the high-stakes Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly by-elections held on Tuesday, October 6, for two state assembly seats, Maduranthagam and Dharapuram, with early trends showing a split lead between key political rivals.

As of 1.00 PM Malaysia time, early trends indicate that the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Vijay, has taken the lead in both the Maduranthagam and Dharapuram constituencies. However, the DMK and AIADMK are trailing TVK closely in both constituencies.

Earlier vote counts showed a surprising turn of events, with the opposition AIADMK surging ahead in Dharapuram.

While the TVK was widely expected to win both constituencies, its trailing position in Dharapuram has sent waves through Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. Although final results are expected only later this evening, political analysts note that these early trends suggest TVK may not have the absolute dominance many assumed, while also showing that AIADMK retains significant electoral influence despite placing third in the state assembly elections last May (2026).
