Parliament bill to limit PM’s tenure fails to get two thirds majority
KUALA LUMPUR – The Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026 to limit the Prime Minister’s term of office to 10 years fell short by two votes to secure the required two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat today.
Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul said the results of the block vote showed 146 members of parliament in favour, 32 absent and 44 who abstained.
“Therefore, the decision is that the motion did not receive a two-thirds majority support,” he said before adjourning the sitting, which will resume tomorrow.
The constitutional amendment required the support of at least two-thirds of the House, or 148 Members of Parliament, to be passed.
The vote was taken after the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, tabled the bill for its second reading.
In a statement recently PAS Secretary General Takiyuddin Hassan said that the opposition will not support the bill for several reasons.
