Bukit Batu: 5-cornered battle with 3 Indian candidates
JOHOR BAHRU: Intense political rivalries are taking centre stage in multiple constituencies for the upcoming Johor state election scheduled for July 11. The core battlefield primarily features a direct clash between the ruling state coalition, Barisan Nasional (BN), and the opposition bloc, Pakatan Harapan (PH), in many constituencies.
While three-cornered fights are taking place in several areas, a handful of constituencies are bracing for chaotic five-cornered contests that have gripped political analysts’ attention. One such high-stakes battleground is the Bukit Batu state seat, where major political outfits have deployed heavy weaponry to secure a win.
The intense focus on Bukit Batu stems from the razor-thin margins of the 2022 general election. In that election, PKR-PH candidate Arthur Chiong Sen Sern scraped through with a razor-thin majority of just 137 votes, narrowly defeating Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC-BN) candidate Suppayah.
Because it remains one of the most vulnerable seats previously held by PKR, rival factions have swarmed the constituency. Adding substantial weight to the race is the newly formed Bersama party, spearheaded by PKR defector Rafizi Ramli, which has thrown its hat into the ring.
In a fascinating demographic twist, three out of the five candidates locking horns in Bukit Batu are of Indian descent. Bersama has fielded Thamili Gopalakrishnan as its official candidate. Meanwhile, the seat was traditionally re-allocated to MIC under the BN banner, positioning Johor MIC Secretary Kumaran Ramakrishnan as the coalition’s frontline contender.
The field is further complicated by Kamarul Zaman Bin Ali, who is running as an independent candidate, while the incumbent assemblyman, Arthur Chiong, has been re-nominated by PKR to defend his turf. Rounding out the five-way fight is the youth-centric party MUDA, which has named Bukit Batu as one of its four targeted seats statewide and is fielding Premanandan Maniam as its candidate.
As political observers closely monitor the shifting dynamics, a critical question looms over whether MIC can successfully reclaim the seat.
Analysts suggest that while the incumbent PKR machinery enters the race with past victory on its side, Bersama’s candidate, Thamili, could act as a massive disruptor. Until recently, Thamili was a highly active and influential grassroots worker within PKR. Furthermore, her father, Gopalakrishnan, holds significant political capital in the region, having won the Tiram state seat back in 2018.
Consequently, Thamili is expected to split a substantial chunk of PKR’s traditional voter base. However, experts point out that this split may not necessarily translate into a direct win for Bersama. Instead, a fractured opposition vote could clear a path for MIC’s Kumaran Ramakrishnan, turning the chaotic multi-cornered battleground heavily to Barisan Nasional’s advantage.
