Wong Chen joins BERSAMA following departure from PKR and resignation as Subang MP
Kuala Lumpur: As widely anticipated in political circles, former Subang Member of Parliament Wong Chen (pic) has officially announced his entry into the newly formed party, Bersama, bringing an end to his 17-year tenure with the People’s Justice Party (PKR).
The announcement was made during a press conference held at Bersama’s headquarters in Puchong on Wednesday (12 Aug 2026), attended by Bersama Chairman Rafizi Ramli and Deputy Chairman Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad. Addressing the media, Wong, a lawyer by profession, stated that he had formally concluded his political journey within PKR following a series of discouraging developments.
Wong confirmed that he stepped down from his parliamentary role on Monday, August 10, nearly a year before the full completion of his term. While offering a formal apology to the voters of Subang for relinquishing his seat early, he emphasised that he maintains a clear conscience regarding his 13-plus years of service as an MP.
Reasons Behind the Exit
Explaining his decision to leave PKR, Wong cited a breakdown in respectful treatment, the blocking of parliamentary fund allocations for his constituency despite his past efforts on behalf of party leadership, and his removal from a government-linked corporate position.
Mounting friction between Wong and top PKR leadership had escalated in recent months, leading analysts to predict his alignment with close associate Rafizi Ramli in Bersama. Confirming those predictions, Wong officially joined the party today.
Despite stepping down from Parliament, Wong assured constituents that he would remain actively committed to serving the people of Subang. He announced plans to operate a local service office in the constituency to continue community work.
Strategic Impact on Upcoming State Elections
Wong’s transition to Bersama comes at a strategic juncture, with political momentum building ahead of the upcoming Malacca state legislative election. Having suffered defeats across Johor constituencies and opted out of the Negeri Sembilan polls, Bersama is under pressure to perform in Malacca.
In contrast, political observers view the inclusion of experienced figures like Wong Chen as a significant boost to Bersama’s organisational strength and policy leadership as it positions itself ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
