  • Tan Sri Rais Yatim, Tan Sri Vigneswaran, and Datuk Seri Saravanan set to deliver keynote addresses

KUALA LUMPUR: A special commemorative stamp will be officially launched on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at 3:00 PM at the Royal Commonwealth Club in Bukit Damansara, Kuala Lumpur, to mark the birth centenary of the late Tan Sri V. Manickavasagam, former Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) President and Cabinet Minister. The event is held in collaboration with Pos Malaysia Berhad.

Born in 1926, Tan Sri Manickavasagam’s centenary celebrations are being spearheaded by a dedicated organising committee chaired by Tan Sri K. Kumaran, with Datuk Seri M. Saravanan serving as Deputy Chairman. The committee’s advisory panel includes MIC President Tan Sri SA Vigneswaran, the late Dato Kandan, and Manickavasagam’s son, Ramani Manickavasagam.

Manickavasagam served as the Member of Parliament for Klang and later Port Klang from 1959. His ministerial career began as a Deputy Minister of Labour from 1961 to 1964, after which he served as a full Cabinet Minister holding key portfolios including Labour, Communications, and Transport between 1964 and 1979.

Assuming the presidency of MIC in 1973, Manickavasagam held the party’s top post for six years. Despite his brief tenure, he introduced transformative initiatives for the socio-economic advancement of the Indian community, including the NESA Multipurpose Co-operative Society and the MIC Unit Trust. He spearheaded major structural reforms within MIC and the broader community, alongside driving critical national development projects as a federal minister.

The commemorative stamp launch ceremony will open with a welcome address by the Organising Committee Secretary, Mr R. Muttarasan. MIC President Tan Sri SA Vigneswaran and Deputy President Datuk Seri Dr M. Saravanan will attend and deliver keynote addresses. Former Cabinet Minister, former Chief Minister of Negeri Sembilan, and former President of the Senate (Dewan Negara), Tan Sri Rais Yatim, will deliver a special memorial address honouring Manickavasagam’s life and legacy.

The program will also feature a video address featuring reflections from former Finance Minister Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, alongside a documentary highlighting Manickavasagam’s life journey. The event will conclude with a vote of thanks delivered by Manickavasagam’s son, Mr Ramni.

The official launch of the commemorative stamp will take place after the speeches, followed by a tea reception. The organising committee cordially invites all to attend and grace this memorable occasion.
