Tun Samy Vellu remembered with fond memories on his 90th birthday

Kuala Lumpur: More than 200 MIC party leaders and cadres gathered yesterday (Sunday, 8 March 2026) at the Netaji Hall in MIC Headquarters to celebrate the 90th birthday of the late Tun S.Samy Vellu, organised by the party’s deputy president, Datuk Seri M.Saravana. MIC President Tan Sri S.A.Vigneswaran, Samy Vellu’s son Datuk Seri Vel Paari, also attended the event together with party Vice President Datuk T.Murugiah, Tan Sri Dr Ambigaibagan and Datuk T.Mohan.


Several dignitaries shared their memories of Samy Vellu and praised his leadership for helming MIC for 31 years. Tan Sri Vigneswaran outlined Samy Vellu’s notable achievements in creating significant wealth for the benefit of the Indian community through MIED and AIMST University. He declared that AIMST University is now estimated to be worth RM 1.5 billion. During the last six years, the government itself contributed RM 115 million to the university and MIED.

Datuk Seri Saravanan attributed his success in politics solely to Samy Vellu, who had moulded him for leadership roles, and thanked Samy Vellu for all the opportunities he had given during his tenure as President of MIC. Saravanan also said that a leader’s legacy is measured by the number of people who remember his deeds, and the large gathering present to celebrate Samy Vellu’s birthday is a testament to the vast contributions he made to the Indian community.
