Tamil Nadu: Historic shift with Vijay as CM – without the 2 Dravidian parties in 50 years!
CHENNAI – Breaking a nearly 60-year political tradition, actor-turned-politician Vijay is set to be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu today at 10:00 AM IST (12:30 PM Malaysian time). The high-profile ceremony is taking place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, a venue capable of seating thousands of supporters and dignitaries.
A Hard-Won Mandate
The road to the swearing-in was marked by significant political manoeuvring. Following multiple meetings with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Vijay successfully presented formal letters of support to prove his majority in the 234-member assembly. His coalition, led by his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), secured the necessary backing from key allies—including the Congress and Left parties—to reach the 120-MLA mark.
The Ceremony and Cabinet
Governor Arlekar will administer the oath of office to Vijay. Interest remains high regarding the composition of the new cabinet. Reports indicate that approximately nine other ministers may take their oaths alongside the new Chief Minister today. Among them are Bussy Ananth, Adhav Arjuna, Sengottayan, Rajmohan and Nirmal Kumar.
End of the Dravidian Era
This inauguration signals a major turning point in the state’s history, marking the first time in over five decades that a government will be formed without either the DMK or the AIADMK at the helm. The atmosphere across Tamil Nadu is one of intense anticipation as the state prepares for what many describe as a “new era” of governance.
Following the ceremony, Vijay will be required to formally prove his majority on the floor of the House by a vote of confidence, scheduled for May 13.
