Johor Polls: 42.16% Voting as at 1.00 pm! 16 Indian candidates – who will win?
Johor Bahru: The ongoing state election in Johor features 16 Indian candidates competing in some of the 56 constituencies across the state. While some of these individuals are running directly against each other, the number of Indian candidates representing major political coalitions has increased to 16 this time around, excluding independent candidates. The final count of how many of these candidates will emerge victorious is expected to be known by tonight.
MIC is fielding 4 candidates under the Barisan Nasional banner, and MIPP is fielding 5 candidates under the Perikatan Nasional symbol. DAP is fielding candidates under the Pakatan Harapan banner, 2 of whom are Indian. Bersama is contesting 15 seats, with Indians fielded in 2. Muda is contesting in 4 seats, and one of them has been allocated to an Indian. PKR, on its part, is fielding 2 candidates under the PH banner.
Meanwhile, as of 1.00 pm on Saturday (July 11), the voter turnout was reported at 42.16%. Observers note that the final results of the Johor state election will largely depend on whether the overall voter turnout trends high or low.
Voting began smoothly this morning at 8:00 am across 1,076 polling stations in the state. These stations accommodate a total of 4,889 voting streams to serve Johor’s 2.7 million registered voters. Polling is scheduled to continue until 6:00 pm this evening.
The official voting day follows a rigorous 14-day campaign period that concluded on Friday night (July 10). A total of 172 candidates are vying for the 56 state assembly seats. The field is highly competitive, featuring 12 four-cornered fights, 27 three-cornered contests, and 14 direct, two-way matchups.
The overall voter turnout is anticipated to reach approximately 70% according to voting trends. It is widely expected that the votes for most constituencies will be counted and the results announced by 10:00 pm tonight. Earlier in the day, media personnel and voters began gathering at various polling stations as early as 7:00 AM to witness and participate in the democratic process.
