Hamzah Zainudin resurges as Opposition leader again – Launches new Party – joins PN

TANAH MERAH (Kelantan): In a stunning political development, Larut Member of Parliament Hamzah Zainudin has made a dramatic comeback to the forefront of Malaysian politics, completely reshaping the opposition landscape. Just as political analysts were contemplating his future following his high-profile expulsion from Bersatu by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Hamzah unveiled a new political vehicle on Saturday, June 13.

The new party, Parti Wawasan Negara, was officially launched at the “Reset” movement convention in Tanah Merah, Kelantan.

Backed by PAS Leadership

The launch ceremony was well attended and endorsed by PAS President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, signalling a significant strategic shift within the opposition ranks. Hamzah confirmed that Wawasan Negara was conceived under the guidance, blessings, and direct support of the PAS leadership.

Following its launch, the new party was immediately inducted as a component member of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition. Concurrently, Hamzah has been re-appointed as the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament. While the decision has been finalised internally, an official administrative announcement from the Parliament Office is expected in the coming days.

The Power of the Opposition Leader portfolio

The Federal Opposition Leader post carries immense institutional weight in contemporary Malaysian governance. Under reforms initiated during the tenure of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, the status of the Opposition Leader was officially elevated to match full Cabinet ministerial rank.

Meanwhile, the dynamic indicates a severe weakening of former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s political leverage within the opposition architecture. When questioned about Muhyiddin’s future status, PAS President Hadi Awang dryly remarked that Muhyiddin must resolve his own situation. This has triggered widespread speculation about whether Muhyiddin’s faction will remain within PN and work with Hamzah Zainudin, defect to an alternative alliance, or attempt to forge a separate coalition altogether.

Eyes on upcoming State Elections

Despite Hamzah assuming the high-profile parliamentary opposition leadership, the overarching chairmanship of Perikatan Nasional will continue to be held by Terengganu Menteri Besar and PAS Vice-President, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar.

With these massive internal structural changes finalised, Hamzah is expected to immediately deploy his political machinery into the impending Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections. Political analysts are already scrambling to calculate how this sudden transformation will impact voter dynamics in the forthcoming state assembly elections of Johor and Negeri Sembilan.
