PM Anwar – Tamil Nadu CM Vijay meeting in Chennai: will it take place?

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is confirmed to travel to New Delhi to attend the upcoming BRICS grouping summit, scheduled to be held on the 12th and 13th of September 2026, following Malaysia’s formal application to join the intergovernmental bloc.

However, speculation remains unconfirmed regarding Anwar’s proposed stopover in Chennai to meet Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay.

Prior reports indicated that Prime Minister Anwar planned to visit Chennai as part of his official itinerary to India. Following Vijay’s election as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Prime Minister Anwar publicly extended congratulations via his official Facebook page.

Subsequently, Deputy Minister of National Unity and PKR’s Member of Parliament for Segamat, R. Yuneswaran, met Chief Minister Vijay in Tamil Nadu to hand-deliver a congratulatory letter on behalf of the Malaysian Prime Minister. These developments sparked media speculation regarding a potential bilateral meeting between the two leaders during Anwar’s upcoming trip to India.

Recent reports from Tamil Nadu media outlets indicate that Chief Minister Vijay is scheduled to travel to the United Kingdom and Europe on an official delegation to attract foreign direct investments (FDI) for Tamil Nadu. Vijay is reported to leave for London on the 10th of September and is expected to return only on the 16th of September 2026.

Due to this overlap, Chief Minister Vijay may be out of the country during Prime Minister Anwar’s scheduled presence in India. Official sources have yet to confirm whether Prime Minister Anwar will proceed with the Chennai stopover in Vijay’s absence or modify his travel schedule to focus exclusively on his engagements in New Delhi and other regions in India.
